Group 130 - Mississauga
Anyone interested in volunteering and working together with others can join local teams (Groups) such as Amnesty International's Group 130 in Mississauga. This Group was formed in 1981. In its initial years the Group gave special attention to long-term work on behalf of adopted Prisoners of Conscience as well as to letter writing in general. The cases which Group 130 has worked on in the past include a wide range of human rights violations in different countries, such as Greece, Zambia, the former Yugoslavia, Vietnam, South Korea, and Indonesia. Memorable, and in some cases, long-lasting bonds have been formed between prisoners and their families, and members of the Mississauga Group.
Over the past decade, the nature of human rights violations changed, and with it the forms of action that members engaged in to respond to and prevent human rights violations. The Group extended its work in the areas of outreach, public awareness, human rights education, and publicity.
Group 130 in Mississauga works together with AITO (Amnesty International Toronto Organization -- the umbrella organization of Amnesty groups in the Toronto area) and other AI groups in Canada to participate in international campaigns, to co-ordinate the work on our action file and to organize exciting local events. Recent events included a "Rock the Boat" cruise, a Latin Dance Night, and a "Jam for Justice" club night. Every year in March we co-operate with The Body Shop at Erin Mills Town Centre for their International Women's Day Action to promote women's rights.
AI Group 130 meets monthly for information on current human rights issues, to respond to Urgent Action appeals, and to discuss necessary business, All meetings are public. Please click here for more information about upcoming meetings and our meeting location.
